Bitcoin has welcomed a new and unique entrant into its stable: A football club.

Botev Plovdiv FC, the oldest football club in Bulgaria, has adopted the blockchain company. The club has also formally adopted the ‘Lighting Network’ payments system, and has also signed up for Nostr, a decentralized crypto protocol.

From now on, fans of the football team will be able to take advantage of the Bitcoin system to pay for match tickets, as well as shop for memorabilia at Botev Plovdiz’s fan shops.

In a statement to the press, Anton Zingarevich, the club’s president expressed his excitement with the move to adopt Bitcoin as a payment statement.

Anton said that, “We foresee Bitcoin payments becoming as ubiquitous as the internet in our daily lives.” The official added that integrating the cryptocurrency aligns the club’s vision, while also simultaneously offering more convenience to fans and other stakeholders.

In a rejoinder, George Malov, the football team’s Bitcoin director, stated that they adopted the decentralized payment system because it offers a myriad of financial, social, and technological advantages.

Revamped Online Presence

Apart from adopting crypto as a form of payment, Plovdiv FC has taken steps to improve its presence on the internet.

They have updated their official website. They have also tweaked their English language social media pages.

A Trend in Football Clubs Adopting Bitcoin

Real Bedford, a football club in the United Kingdom, was the first club in the world to adopt the digital coin.

Reacting to another team adopting the digital payment system, Peter McCormack, the chairman of Real Bedford said that it “so cool” to witness more football teams adopt Bitcoin. He added that the move will bring more success to the Bulgarian team, while also helping raise awareness for Bitcoin.

Mr. McCormack was instrumental in his club adopting the decentralized payment system in 2021.

Speaking to Cointelegraph, McCormack said with the current financial irresponsibility plaguing the football game, adopting a Bitcoin standard will help clubs build a solid financial foundation.
